The trend began with renowned landscape artist Sir Hans Heysen, who moved to Hahndorf in 1912 after buying a property called ‘The Cedars’ where he lived and worked until his death in 1968. The elegant property, which includes the artist’s studio and superb gardens, is open to the public for guided tours. Heysen’s influence can be seen today in the many private art galleries and artists' studios which line the bustling main street of Hahndorf. Make sure you spend some time at The Hahndorf Academy. Housed in a magnificent heritage building, the academy includes galleries, a small museum, artist studios and a shop featuring work by local artists. In Stirling, Aptos Cruz regularly exhibits works by leading Australian painters, sculptors and photographers, as well as selling designer furniture, lighting and homewares from around the world. Stirling is also home to The Barn arts hub with its gallery, studio and classes. Other highlights are the Top of the Torrens Gallery in Birdwood and Oakbank Weaver, housed in the cellar of the old Pike’s brewery. The workshop makes tapestries, throw rugs, upholstery fabric, scarves and other items for sale.
